Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year. Please take a moment to read through the website. The information can be a valuable resource for you and your family. We will work as a team to provide your student with the best education possible.
Harrisville-Wells Memorial School offers a comprehensive program that strives to meet student's needs while reinforcing respect, responsibility, and safety. All academic instruction is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, and student progress is reported on a standards-based report card. HWMS students and staff continue to embrace our norms centered around social-emotional development, bullying prevention, student protection, kindness, courage, perseverance, and empathy. HWMS continues to implement the Affordable Choice Program, which offers reasonable tuition to non-Harrisville resident students.
This year, HWMS focuses on outdoor learning, striving to increase instructional time in our fields, forests, and local habitats. Teachers regularly host morning meetings, Science, English Language Arts, and Mathematics classes outside and strive for 'play-based learning' through collaboration with other teachers around the district. Instruction also focuses on community connections, and students learn about local geology, evident in the mill buildings, historical gravestones, and local architecture. All HWMS staff members look forward to transforming the outdoor instructional areas to enhance our hands-on learning experiences.
On behalf of the HWMS students, staff, and family, I welcome you to our school community. Please reach out if you need support or have any questions.
Kate Shanks, HWMS Principal/Instructional Coach
